30 day writing challenge
For the last year or so, I've been pretty quiet on the blog front. Aside from Twitter and Instagram, I've been pretty quiet full stop. I've barely written anything, I've barely drawn anything, all the things I've planned to do have fallen by the wayside.
The main reason for this is parenthood. Since becoming a father, much of the free time I once had is now taken with doing stuff with my wife and son. And I'm totally cool with that. Writing and drawing can be picked up and dropped at any time, our experience of our son growing up will only happen once and already I feel like time is passing in the blink of an eye. One minute I was being handed this tiny baby boy and in no time at all he's walking up to me with his arms out wanting a hug, playing, laughing, dancing, making (his own unique brand of) music and drawing.
I'm not missing these moments if I can help it.
That said, I do have personal projects I want to complete. I want to write more. I want to get ideas for comics out of my head and into people's hands. The simple fact is I need to make time. I need to take the old "sleep when you're dead" saying literally. On average, I get at least one, if not two, hours of down-time a day. This time falls at the end of the day so I'm often pretty wiped out and the last my brain wants to do is get the cogs moving again. It's far more appealing to sit with a book or watch TV.
I need to snap out of it otherwise I'll never get anything done.
Today is the first day of Marc Jenkins' 30 Day Writing Challenge. The idea is to build up some good habits around writing, setting some goals and sticking to it. So this is the first step to sorting my head out and getting stuff back out into the world.
My writing goals will vary between public and private but I'm aiming to:
- Write for a minimum of 30 minutes a day - either drafting/publishing a blog post or making progress with writing my comics.
- Post at least 2 blog posts a week.
These goals will force me into a habit and should work with the free-time that I have available.
