Daily meditation
While being in lockdown with a 5 year old and a baby less than 6 months old, you don't get much time to switch off. When the kids are asleep, jobs around the house need doing. When they're done, I've got comic work I need to do and on it goes...
About a month ago, I came across an app called Medito, a free app offering lots of different types of guided meditation. I've tried apps like Calm before, and though I really do like the app, having the majority of content behind a paywall has been a bit off-putting. I didn't want to commit cash before I knew what I'd get out of it. Having said that, I had no clue what I'd get out of using Medito either but figured I'd try it anyway. I don't need to commit to paying, so what did I have to lose?
An unknown goal reveals itself
I didn't know what I was looking for. I had no idea if meditation would be right for me or even be any use. But, I went ahead with it anyway. Medito has a Daily Meditation section where you can choose between a 3 and 20 minute guided session. I started with 3 minutes for the first few days then upped to 5 minutes.
Just 5 minutes. Every day. 5 minutes where I put every single thought to one side (as best I can, at least) and just sit quietly and breathe. Trying to focus my mind on nothing but breathing in and out.
So far, this has become the point of meditation for me. As a 34 year old man with a family, a full-time job and a graphic novel in the works, it's become my tiny daily window where I can put everything aside for 5 minutes and relax.
Breathe in.
Breathe out.
