Life in Numbers: April '23

Do I need to write an intro each month? I dunno, maybe I'll just get straight into the meat of the content...

Podcasts: 55 episodes, 53 hours

Those following these specific posts will no doubt have guessed that podcasts are my main source of content consumption these days and the type of podcasts keeps diversifying as I discover new ones. This month's discovery is Dan Snow's History Hit which comprises of episodes averaging about 30 minutes in length, each one covers a specific event or historical topic. I'm not listening to ever single one but I've been enjoying scrolling through the backlog and picking out episodes which pique my interest.

Films: 5 watched, 8 hours

It feels a bit late to start tracking 5 months in but I've been favouring TV shows over films a lot this year. I've been catching up on shows I'd started and not finished, like House of the Dragon but the notable film/show combo this month has to be The Dark Crystal.

We started watching The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance when it first dropped on Netflix many years ago but we only got a few episodes in and never went back to it, though I've always wanted to. This month, I finally did and watched the original Dark Crystal film along with the series on Netflix... and the 'making of' documentary on Netflix for good measure. The whole thing together was such an amazing experience and the production design I found really inspiring. I loved how the show helped fill in some of the history of Thra which the film only really hints at. The show ends leaving a pretty significant gap in the story to where the film begins so I'm hoping there's more to come at some point.

Another discovery was Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles on Netflix. I started watching it with the kids when it was first released but they didn't seem to dig it all that much but I decided to carry on with it and I'm glad I did. It's an excellent story, the animation is lush and the production design here too is absolutely killer. Inspiring stuff!

Books: 1 read

Reading this month has been a slow one, but for good reason. I've had A Clash of Kings, the second book in the Game of Thrones series, sitting by my bed for about 6 months. I started reading it last year but got distracted by the many comics I also wanted to read so I decided to go back and focus on getting that finished. I hoped to get it finished before April ended but it carried over into May so it'll be listed in next month's list as I'm listing books as they're completed in each month, not really accounting for when I actually started reading them.
