Marked improvements
I've never been much of a reader. I've always liked reading but growing up I had a very illustrative, visual disposition which meant I spent less time working on my reading skills. As a result, when I hit my mid-teens and started to pick books up, I found the speed of my reading wasn't quite as fast as it probably could have been.
Over the last ten years or so I've gone through periods of not reading much at all to not being able to put a book down so the speed of my reading has never much improved.
Since I decided to take a more pro-active approach and read something every day, I've noticed the speed of my reading has improved greatly and it only came to my attention with the book I'm reading right now.
A bit of background...
When I was studying for my final year of GCSEs, I decided to start reading The Lord of the Rings. The first film had been released and I wanted to read the books before seeing the film adaptations so I skipped the cinema going experience and bought a paperback version of The Fellowship of the Ring with the aim of completing it by the time the DVD was released. I can't recall exactly when I started to read it but I remember it took me a long while to get through. I often read it daily but even so it must have taken me about 5 months to finish.
Recently, I got the urge to read the book again, so about a month ago, I bought a new copy on my Kindle and am right now approaching the end of The Fellowship of the Ring. A fifth of the time it took me ten years ago.
This is quite a personal post that I imagine won't really interest anyone but I wanted to write about it more as a reminder to myself that perseverance, time and effort will result in marked improvements.
